Surrealism and Salvador DaliSurrealism is defined as an art style developed in the1920s in Europe, characterized by using the subconsciousas a source of creativity to liberate pictorial subjects andideas. Surrealist paintings often depict unexpected orirrational objects in an atmospheric state or fantasy , creating adreamlike scenario ( www.progressiveart.com 2004). The wordSurrealism was created in 1917 by the writer GuillauneApollinaire. He used it to describe two instances ofartistic innovation ( Bradley 6). In 1924, in theManifeste du Surrealisme which launched the surrealistmovement, the writer Andre Brenton and his friend PhilippeSoupault adopted the word,baptized by the name ofSurrealism the new mode of expression which we had at ourdisposal and which we wished to pass on to our friends.Brenton adopted the word Surrealism to describe the 2literary and artistic practice of himself and hisfriends.
